Budget airline EasyJet has announced plans to hold mid-air wedding ceremonies.
The idea that couples could say ‘I do’ at 30,000 ft and descend straight into their honeymoon is one that EasyJet’s UK regional general manager, Paul Simmons feels could easily catch on.
However, Heather Dsenisi, Deputy Registrar at Southampton Registry Office is a little more sceptical about the idea. “Officially, British marriages have to be conducted in a licensed building, which has to be a permanent structure that doesn’t move,” she stated.
Dsenisi added that despite many requests, cruise ships in Southampton harbour could only offer blessings, not actual marriage ceremonies, and a local council registrar or minister of religion would have to be present to carry out the formalities.
Simmons’ idea that pilots would be able to officiate over the ceremony could also come across some objections, in particular, if they were carrying out a wedding ceremony, who would be flying the plane?
