Mount Everest Hosts Cricket Match At The Highest Level

Two teams have competed in a bid to claim the world record for the highest cricket match, half way up a mountain.

The attempt for a field sport played at the highest altitude took place just near Base Camp, 16,945 ft up Mount Everest.

50 people made the 9 day trek to the Gorak Shep plateau after expedition leader Richard Kirtley noticed on a previous trip that it looked remarkably like The Oval cricket ground.

The Twenty20 match took place at an altitude where the body absorbs only two thirds of the oxygen it would at sea level, and at more than twice the altitude that professional footballers are allowed to play at.

England cricketer Andrew Strauss was amongst those who wished the cricketers well as they raised over £250,000 for The Lords Taverners and Himalayan Trust UK charities.

After months of training for the whole party, Team Tenzing lost to Team Hillary by 36 runs with 6 balls remaining.

Guinness World Records have yet to confirm the attempt as it currently has no entry under that category.
