A mid flight disaster was narrowly averted recently as a suicidal passenger tried to open an aeroplane door at 32,000ft.
Cabin crew had noticed 47 year old Anne Gilmour staring at the cabin door prior to her suicide attempt on Flight AF 50554 from Charles De Gaulle to Edinburgh last January.
As Gilmour grabbed the door handle and tried to turn it, cabin crew member Francoise Ulbricht managed to pull her away, terrified that the door could fly open at any second.
Gilmour was then confined to a window seat and kept under constant supervision until her arrest on arrival at Edinburgh airport.
Gilmour also attempted to jump from the moving police car and told officers she was suffering from depression and had felt no concern for the safety of other passengers.
After psychiatrists declared her fit to plead, Gilmour’s defence QC, Ronnie Renucci stated that his client’s intention was for ‘self harm’ and now fully understood the danger she had caused. Gilmour pleaded guilty to culpable and reckless conduct at Edinburgh Sheriff Court and was remanded in custody prior to sentencing later this month.
